Bayan Lepas lunch crawl: 4 stops on foot

4 stops · 1.4km on foot

Four lunches inside 1.4km of Bayan Baru, which makes this one of the easier walks on the island to do without a car. The catch is timing, not legwork. Heng Kee runs out by lunch, Mekdina packs up mid-afternoon, and AhMa PanMee has not even opened at 11:00 while the other three are already serving. Take them in that order and nothing is shut when you turn up.

  1. 1

Heng Kee Lemon Koay Teow Soup

    07:00 to 14:00 · shut Sunday

Heng Kee Lemon Koay Teow Soup is the only kopitiam on the island putting lemon in the koay teow th'ng, and a decade inside Kafe Kam 88 says the idea works. Clear homemade broth, thin noodles, big springy fish balls, a mother and son running it. It sells out by lunch, so this is the one you set an alarm for.

  2. 2

点心栈 Dim Sum Station - Promenade

    08:00 to 15:30 · 657m from the last stop

Dim Sum Station - Promenade is the air-conditioned sit-down in the middle of a hawker walk. Everything is cooked to order instead of wheeled past on pushcarts, and there is a steamer built into the table so the last basket arrives as warm as the first. It costs more per head than either stall around it.

  3. 3

    MEKDINA NASI KERABU TUMIS

    08:00 to 15:00 · 337m from the last stop · shut Sunday

Mekdina Nasi Kerabu Tumis hides behind the bus stop by the Sunshine Square lights, and most people walk straight past without seeing it. Dina cooks the nasi kerabu daging bakar herself, grilled beef over the rice. Hers is the Muslim-owned kitchen on this walk, which matters if you are eating with a mixed group.

  4. 4

    AhMa PanMee 阿嫲刀麻切 (Bayan Baru)

    11:00 to 15:00 · 411m from the last stop

AhMa PanMee (Bayan Baru) does not open until 11:00, which is why it comes last. Noodles hand-cut the Pahang way, torn irregular and fat with a proper chew, sitting in a herbal soup that eats like a grandmother's. The house sambal belongs in it, and the Hakka tofu if there are a few of you.

Saturday is the day this works end to end. Heng Kee and Mekdina both take Sunday off, so a Sunday version is the dim sum room and the pan mee shop only, and those two run every day of the week. If the lemon bowl has already gone by the time you arrive, do the walk backwards and come back for it early another morning.
