George Town dinner crawl: 4 stops on foot

4 stops · 1.4km on foot

Four dinner stops in old George Town, about 1.4km end to end, all of it on foot. The run goes wantan mee on Carnarvon, a Nyonya sit-down on Kimberley, Hokkien mee on Presgrave, then nasi kandar on Jalan Gurdwara. Two of them are hawker seating, so the walk swings between a plate on the kerb and a proper table.

  1. 1

Mother And Son Wonton Mee Stall

    16:00 to 22:00 · shut Monday

Mother And Son Wonton Mee Stall has held the Carnarvon corner for forty years, and the queue still forms on the kerb. The noodles come chewy without the alkaline tang and the dumplings run juicy. Seating is kerbside tables next to passing traffic, with the noise and the fumes that implies.

  2. 2

    Tina’s Kitchen

    11:00 to 21:30 · 426m from the last stop · shut Wednesday

Tina's Kitchen is a family-run Nyonya kitchen on Lebuh Kimberley working a short menu properly. Regulars repeat the nasi ulam and chicken kapitan, and the pengat sago finishes things off. Staff will walk you through what lands on the table. Prices sit above the rest of this route, around RM 40 to 60 a head.

  3. 3

    888 Hokkien Mee

    15:00 to 21:30 · 632m from the last stop · shut Thursday

888 Hokkien Mee opens at 3pm and tables fill soon after, so come early rather than late. The broth is dried prawns and prawn shells simmered for hours, sweet and savoury with no fishy edge. Ask for roast pork on top, which stays crispy in the soup. A drink has to be ordered or the table costs a small fee.

  4. 4

    Nasi Kandar Deen Maju

    12:00 to 21:30 · 322m from the last stop · shut Friday

Nasi Kandar Deen Maju sells by set: B is chicken, D is fish, and saying 'Set D Nasi Ikan, fish' saves a round of confusion at the counter. Daging Hitam is the house signature, but the fried chicken with kuah campur is what reviewers single out. The queue runs long in the heat, so bring an umbrella.

Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday are the days all four are open; on every other day of the week one of them is shut. Worth checking each stop's day before setting out, especially if you are building this around Tina's Kitchen or Deen Maju. If one is dark, the other three still add up to a full dinner.
