Tanjung Tokong dinner crawl: 3 stops on foot

3 stops · 0.9km on foot

Three dinner stops around Seri Tanjung Pinang and Mount Erskine, all under a kilometre apart on foot. You get satay, a Hainanese chicken chop, and a curry mee that only runs in the evening, which is rare for a dish Penang mostly eats at breakfast.

  1. 1

    Hamid Satay

    18:00 to 23:00 · shut Thursday, Sunday

Get to Hamid Satay close to 18:00. The curry mee at the last stop wraps up at 20:00, so there isn't much slack. Go for the mutton satay, which reviewers like for its tenderness and crispy edges, with a plate of nasi impit. Chicken satay is popular too, but it can take over 35 minutes to arrive, so order it first.

  2. 2

James Foo Western Food @Tanjung Tokong

    12:00 to 22:00 · 392m from the last stop

James Foo Western Food @Tanjung Tokong cooks Western dishes the Hainanese way, and the sizzling chicken chop gets the most praise. Cordon Bleu, grilled salmon and a mixed grill are on the menu too. Queues get long at dinner and on weekends, so expect a line on a Saturday night.

  3. 3

    Mt Erskine Night Curry Mee

17:00 to 20:00 · 557m from the last stop · shut Monday, Friday

Mt Erskine Night Curry Mee has no Google listing. Look for it in the night section of Mt Erskine Market. The soup is a santan-based white curry, and the sambal is fragrant with a real kick, so stir in a little before adding the lot. There's a dry curry mee too if you'd rather skip the broth.

Saturday is the day to do it. Hamid is shut Thursdays and Sundays and the curry mee stall takes Mondays and Fridays off, which leaves Saturday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Budget is modest: two of the three stops come in under RM 20 a head, with James Foo around RM 20 to 40.
