Old timers in Butterworth will know of Cafe Sin Wah and the Hokkien Mee which have been around for ages. The kopitiam is located in a “Shack” along the busy Raja Uda that somehow time has left behind.

Crossed over to the mainland in search of something old-school and found a gem: Hainan 48, a stall dishing noodles for over 60 years. A bold sign out front shouts Char Hor Fun and Mee Sua Gor—so of course we tried both.

This is a traditional, old-fashioned coffee shop selling a variety of dishes, including fried rice noodles, Hokkien fried rice, Hokkien noodles, white curry noodles, fried kuey teow, nasi lemak, and Javanese noodles.

Highly recommended the ice white coffee. The coffee shop owner has his creative way to classify the different level of coffee intensity. Very friendly owner. The wanton noodle and dried curry noodle were tasty.

Char hor fun very good here. Great wok hey and fresh pan fried fish slices. Fried nian gao also very nice. Crispy and light batter with generous ingredients. Hokkien mee so so for me.

I don't know if it's because the foreign workers don't understand Malay or if the boss really doesn't have many choices. They don't sell any sugar-free drinks besides iced water. 🙄

Hainan 48 operates from 9 AM to 5 PM. You can try their Char Hor Fan, Yi Mee, Fried Crispy Noodles, and Mee Sua Soup , they’re quite delicious!

There are a few stalls which open after 8am Hokkien mee here is quite good. Have a stall that sells tasty goteng pisang n ti kueh or after 10am.
