Kafe Heng Huat is a coffee shop along Lorong Selamat in George Town, Penang . This is the location of the famous Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow. Although I have tasted the char koay teow many years ago, and I find it to be "not bad", I…

The next Char Koay Teow stop was at Kafe Heng Huat in Lorong Selamat. The lady owner can be recognized easily as she wears a huge goggle. The plate of char koay teow completed with large prawns and cockles is priced at RM9.00.

I tried the Red Hat Lady’s Char Koay Teow long before the social media fame. Honestly? It didn’t live up to the hype—for the price, the taste, or the vibe.

Yes, I have to agree this plate of Char Koay Teow (RM10) was good. Frying with charcoal has essentially imparted an elusive wok-hei into it. The koay teow was rather smooth and slick easily into your mouth.

A plate of CKT here goes for RM 6.50, or more if you asks for extras. The photos you see here were the Rm 6.50 plates, with three really huge prawns that is properly marinated with salt to give it that extra kick, there’s also egg,…

For RM10, the CKT comes with three huge prawns, a good serving of fried pork lard, and slices of lap cheong. However, the CKT here is not served with cockles. We enjoyed it! Mr Red Shirt’s plate of CKT was full of wok hei.

The prawns were very fresh, big and bursty. The crispy pieces of lard were well distributed and there were also bits of crushed up lard. Thin, slightly crisped Lap Cheong (chinese sausage), juicy cockles, egg and chives – it was THE…

Yes I said it. I actually like the overrated “ Lorong Selamat char kuey teow” . It cost me RM8 and I didn’t even finish the prawns. It was the kuey teow that had me hooked.

Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow A legendary char koay teow since 1967, its quality is undeniable. The wok hei is strong, the noodles are soft but not mushy, and the toppings of large shrimp, lap cheong, and egg create a rich flavor.

The CKT is a let down. No taste and really oily. I wonder why this place is recommended by some article. If you have high expectation eating a good plate of CKT you will be unhappy. Not easy to get parking around here.

A classic kopitiam-style spot known for selling their signature Char Koay Teow. It’s nice to see the younger generation now taking over most of the cooking. This was my first time trying the stall. 1.

This was without a doubt my favourite CKT when I first tried it exactly 10 years ago and I returned many times since. Fast forward post-Covid, I had it today and could not finish my plate because it was so so so salty.

Tried 10 CKT around Penang and this is my favourite so far. This plate doesn’t rely on hum or cai poh. Instead, it’s about fat control and flavour clarity. Pork lard is fragrant, Chinese sausage brings a rounded sweetness.

Pretty good CKT with 2 sizeable prawns. Had wok hei but not strong enough possibly because it was fried too fast. Tasty and not over salty. Only complain is its too oily.

By far, this is the most delicious CKT for me in Penang. Not too oily, the saltiness is already OK, not to mention the super big and juicy prawns. Definitely worth the wait.
