For the uninitiated, amplah (aka ambra) is similar to sour plum, so the drink is sour yet sweet (not like the pork). I’ve been trying amplah juice all over Penang and this is the best one yet, a MUST-TRY DRINK when you’re in Penang.

Hon Kei has since moved to a larger premise a few doors away from the coffeeshop, offering pork noodles, porridge and other items like fish noodles, tomyam noodles and fried dishes.

If you grew up in Penang, you’ve probably had a bowl from Hon Kei Food Corner (汉记小食店) at least once. Tucked along Kampung Malabar, this once-tiny pushcart has grown into one of Penang’s best-known food spots.

Dropped by at Hon Kei Food Corner for porridge after the heritage walk. Taste wise good, more ingredients compared to the porridge I had earlier this week at Perak Lane. Waited 5 mins for the food to arrive, (versus 35 mins) and price is 2.

This is a place I'll definitely visit again if I ever go to Penang again. The food is truly comfort food. The broth is truly extraordinary. It's not overdone, but it's truly delicious. This is truly extraordinary.

Update 14.4.2026 : We order. Minced meat noodle RM 14.70., Minced meat + meat ball Vermicelli RM19.70. What stand out is they provide lot of minced meat and the soup so fragrance.

Starting with noodles containing only meatballs on the first day in Penang, I spent three days of my 3-night, 4-day trip there. I enjoyed every single dish, including pork noodles, porridge, kaya toast, fried dumplings, and milk tea.

I ordered the mixed noodles with minced pork, pork belly, and pork intestines (thick and thin). The toppings were very generous, and the portion was quite large. The soup flavor suited Taiwanese tastes. You should definitely give it a try!

One of the restaurants that sells the best soup, there are several delicious side dishes, but I haven't had a chance to try them all. The soup broth is very tasty and there are lots of toppings, highly recommended 👍

Love this food so much. Already come here couple times. Will always revisit. The broth taste thick and yummy. Always order porridge or the noodles. They closed every thursday( but check it again if get change any time)

Ordered lor bak and salted vege porridge. Salted vege porridge is superrrrr flavourful and good! Lor bak tastes very processed but crunch of the skin is quite good. Air conditioned, very comfortable place.

Went to the restaurant this morning. Found hair in my soup which killed my appetite straight away. Those people in the food industry such as hawkers should wear hair net but none of them do that.

This is my all-time favourite pork soup noodle restaurant in penang. Menu stays the same over the years (why change when the food is good). They upgraded the restaurant to be air-conditioned.
